30 Things to Do with Kids in Kingston, Jamaica

Updated: Mar 23

I'm taking it back to the land of my birth; sharing tips on what to do with kids in Kingston, Jamaica. I find this post valuable, because many times, those who live in, or visit Kingston/St. Andrew, may feel like it's a struggle to find entertainment for little ones within the country's capital. Without research, it truly can be tough. So I've made it easier for you! Here are several activities I've gathered in or around the Kingston area. The list caters to diverse interests, to offer kids a holistic experience. I've included: sports, nature, history, adventure, food, amusement parks, museums, art and more! More importantly, I've listed places I would feel comfortable visiting (as in, they are pretty safe). Honestly, I’ve seen some recommendations online that I wouldn't be sending anyone to. That being said, prepare to bookmark this blog and create great memories whether you're visiting with kids, living in the area, or hosting some kiddies soon!

  1. Devon House - this a no brainer and perhaps the first place anyone would think of. Grassy areas where the kids can run, ice cream (though I wish they'd offer a kid-sized cone), a play area and more. Of course, this stop is a popular option. For older kids, add in a bit of history & take the tour of the mansion on site which belonged to Jamaica's first black millionaire.

2. Coco Jam - another popular option. Your kids will definitely enjoy the collection of games and activities in this indoor game arcade.

3. Go Take a Hike (Holywell Park) - for the adventurous or nature-loving family! Why not let the kids use all that energy hiking the hills of St. Andrew, bordering Portland? Enjoy a picnic, play games and soak in nature upon arrival. If you're really into the outdoors, you can even camp on the grounds.

4. Hope Botanical Gardens- a perfect space to let the kids be free, with endless green areas, beautiful flowers and tasteful features. Another picnic perfect spot!

5. See a Play- the performing arts are a huge part of Jamaican culture! Whether at the National Pantomime, Centerstage or the Little Little Theatre, expose your kids to the colour and excitement of live Jamaican drama.

6. The Institute of Jamaica- I remember going here as a little girl! So many times, in smaller countries, we wish we could stroll the halls of the museums of Paris, Rome or New York. But why not take some time to appreciate what's offered locally? The IOJ offers several museum divisions (including the Natural History Museum of Jamaica and the Music Museum). There are also exhibitions, libraries and more that capture much of the island's history. Your child is bound to leave with knowledge, culture and memorable experiences.

7. Hope Zoo - take a stop to appreciate the animal kingdom at the local zoo.

8. The National Gallery- another museum, because I'm all for culture and enrichment! I also visited as a kid and felt quite sophisticated. I guess my school was pretty awesome! The National Gallery is the largest public art museum in the English-speaking Caribbean! Wow! The collection consists of early, modern and contemporary art forms. Talk about giving your child exposure!

9. Port Royal & Fort Charles - history unloaded! Let your mini walk the very streets that the Pirates of the Caribbean lived and occupied. Enter the forts, the Giddy House, see the larger-than-life cannons and hear the tales of the Buccaneers. Finish off with the iconic meal, Fish and Festival.

10. Boat Ride to Lime Cay- perfect as a follow up to your stop by Port Royal! Hop on a boat and visit the uninhabited, but beautiful little island of Lime Cay.

12. A Walk by the Palisadoes Promenade- get some wholesome family exercise in, walking along the picturesque Palisadoes path which lines the Kingston Harbour. Safety note: please be careful, as a very busy road runs parallel and the harbor is directly beneath the path (separated only by rocks). This may be more suited for older kids, ones who follow rules well, or ones that can be pushed in a stroller. If you're into fishing, some opt to do that too in this area!

13. Go Chasing Waterfalls- unlike the 90’s song, go hunting for hideaways of refreshment in the hills of St Andrew. I believe our collection of crystal clear, swimmable waterfalls help differentiate Jamaica. Check out Falling Edge Waterfalls/Bowden Hill Waterfalls, for example. Or travel to the nearby Bull Bay and visit Cane River Falls, which is said to have been a hideaway where Bob Marley enjoyed washing his locs.

14. Straun Castle Gardens - about 20 minutes drive from the shopping area of Manor Park, in the Stony Hill area, is a wedding venue that also doubles as an entertainment getaway. It's amenities include: pools (with water sourced from a river), playground facilities and animals on site. There’s also badminton, tennis, fishing and board games to keep boredom far away. Caution: the roads to get there may not be the easiest to maneuver, but most find it worth it!

15. Bicycle Riding in the Hills- if you're into an adventure and have older kids, grab two wheels and a local. Head to the hills, and visit one of the areas safer highlands with less traffic and easier terrains to cycle. The Manor Park area or lower lying areas of Beverly Hills or Jacks Hill may be good options.

16. See a Dance Show - culture on display! Don't miss opportunities to watch productions by the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica, Dance Theatre Xaymaca, The Ashe Company, One Body One God and more.

17. Sabina Park- Jamaica, as a part of the West Indies team, has a strong history of cricket. I would say prior to Track and Field, it was the sport most Jamaicans were passionate about. Relive the days of cricket greats like Michael Holding, Courtney Walsh and Chris Gayle, by letting your little one learn about this sport steeped in British history.

19. Bob Marley Museum- I don't think this one needs much explaining at all. Visit the Legend’s former home, leave with lots of knowledge and "feel arite"!

There you have it, a handy list to keep the kids occupied! Which one of these where you "today years old", when you found out about it?

One final point, before visiting most of these site, I encourage you to call ahead to verify opening times. Some are only open to the public on select dates. Particularly the Coffee Farm, Sabina Park, Straun Castle Gardens and the Go-Kart track may be available to the public at particular times.
